High-Value Greenhouse Gas Reduction Opportunity Study

Solution Provided | Technical validation and pre-concept study on a Greenhouse Gas reduction opportunity.

Disciplines | Process Engineering

Carnac identified a high-value Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction opportunity for an alumina refinery. Carnac were subsequently engaged to complete a Pre-Concept Study for technical validation of the opportunity.

Carnac carried out the following:

  • Developed and optimised a SysCAD model to technically validate the opportunity;

  • Provided process schematics to illustrate the flowsheet changes required to capture the decarbonisation opportunity;

  • Identified impacts of the proposed flowsheet changes on other areas of the plant;

  • Estimated potential reductions in GHG emissions, energy consumption and water consumption; and

  • Estimated the new operating costs of the proposed flowsheet.

This opportunity capitalised on other process improvement opportunities being developed at the refinery. By assessing the entire refinery, Carnac found that significant reductions in energy consumption, water consumption, and GHG emissions could potentially be achieved by implementing the recommendations.
