Gravity Take-Up Towers Options Report

Solution Provided | Pre-Feasibility Study

Discipline | Mechanical, Electrical and Structural Engineering

Carnac - Project Delivery Services Pty Ltd (Carnac) were engaged to perform a pre-feasibility study (PFS). The objective of the PFS was to develop solutions to safety risks to maintenance personnel. These risks are associated with the lifting and securing of the conveyor Gravity Take-Up Units (GTU) masses on multiple conveyors.

Carnac investigated six options identified during the initial site visit as follows:

  1. Option 1 - Pinning the GTU mass for maintenance activities;
  2. Option 2A - Permanently installled winch system with integral winch;
  3. Option 2B - Permanently installed winch system with mobile winch/franna;
  4. Option 3 - Permanent chains attached to GTU mass;
  5. Option 4 - Strengthening of GTU mass guides; and
  6. Option 5 - New All Terrain crane.

Carnac recommended implementing Options 1 and 4 and a mixture of 2A and 2B at each location to address all identified problems.

This was determined to be the most effective and efficient solution for both operations and maintenance.
