Radial Stacker Rail Replacement

Project Value | $100k

Solution Provided | Structural integrity assessment

Disciplines | Civil, Structural

Carnac was engaged to inspect, assess and perform an engineering design check on the footing of their existing radial stacker to confirm its adequacy under updated loading conditions. The load capacity of the footing was to be used in the design of a future replacement rail stacker. Walkover assessments, soil testing and finite element analysis were performed in order to

  • Assess the subsurface soil and groundwater conditions local to the radial stacker cyclone footing and tie-down bases;
  • Recommend appropriate footing preparation procedures including compaction criteria and suitability of in situ materials for re-use as fill;
  • Provide a modulus of subgrade reaction for use in structural design;
  • Provide degree of compaction of material below footing;
  • Assess how the soil would interact with concrete and steel elements;
  • Provide an assessment of the earthquake site subsoil classification in accordance with AS1170.4;
  • Confirm consistency of subsoil compaction along the length of existing footing;
  • Provide allowable bearing pressures and total and differential settlement estimates for footing strengthening; and
  • Provide recommendations for suitable footing systems for proposed strengthening works.
