Water Security

Solution Provided | Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS)

Disciplines | Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering

Carnac Project Delivery Services (Carnac) was engaged by the client to carry out a PFS on the security of the water sources at the client's site.

The intent of the study was to identify a broad range of alternate water saving solutions to existing cooling systems and to perform sufficient investigations to identify a single preferred, go forward option to be taken into a subsequent Feasibility Study (FS) phase.

Carnac’s investigation included:

  1. Pinch Analysis; and

  2. Assessment of alternative Cooling Methodology.

Carnac used the outputs from the client's SysCAD model to identify and collate key information regarding each of the heated and cooled streams and its associated temperature range. From this, Carnac prepared pinch charts, identified cross pinch heat transfer duties and opportunities from improvements in approach temperatures for each stream.

Carnac developed a number of opportunities, documenting:

  • How the benefits could be realised;

  • The maximum opportunity that could theoretically be achieved;

  • An approximation of the likely benefit that could be achieved (i.e. accounting for natural losses); and

  • Any mitigating circumstances (e.g. large equipment modifications or additions required, significant pumping distances, etc).
