Prefeasibility Study for an Enhanced Alumina Recovery and Cost Reduction Opportunity

Solution Provided | Identified and developed an alumina recovery and cost reduction opportunity from the concept to prefeasibility study stages.

Disciplines | Process, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Civil and Structural Engineering

Carnac identified several cost reduction opportunities for an alumina refinery via the completion of a Maximum Technical Capability Assessment (debottlenecking study). Carnac further developed the opportunities at a concept level and selected which opportunity to take forward for a prefeasibility study.

The selected opportunity focused on improvements to the tailings washing circuit via the implementation of a new technology. Carnac also identified and developed several smaller projects in other areas of the refinery that would be required to fully capture the value of the opportunity. The overall project provides the following benefits:

  • Enhanced alumina recovery and reduced operating costs providing the client with a competitive advantage in the alumina market;

  • Positioning the operation for greenhouse gas and water usage reduction opportunities;

  • Reduced safety risks; and

  • Freeing up of process equipment for other uses.
