Stack Inlet Duct Analysis

Solution Provided | Modification of stack inlet ductwork up to the heating/dilution air inlet on stack with the intent of increasing liquid water delivery.

Discipline | Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering

Carnac – Project Delivery Services Pty Ltd (Carnac) was engaged by our client to assess the discharge ductwork from the Induced Draft (ID) fans into the main vent stack of their processing facility. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was used in conjunction with mechanical assessment to:

  • Qualitatively assess the initial operating conditions of the ductwork and stack;

  • Develop options for improving water recovery; and

  • Optimising ductwork modifications for water recovery.

CFD modelling was successfully used to develop and design two concepts:

  • Concept 1: Utilise existing ductwork geometry and include internal modification only with new drain nozzles; and

  • Concept 2: Modify the design for the entry duct and diffuser.
